Guide to Facial Massage: Benefits & Step-By-Step Techniques

What first comes to mind when you think about getting a quick, healthy glow while treating scars and preventing wrinkles? Is it expensive serums? A complex, 10-step Korean skincare routine?

Those are certainly great options, but there’s an even better one that’s simple and free to DIY: facial massages! We’ll guide you through what a facial massage is, its benefits, and how to do it at home, so you can have radiant skin in minutes.

What is a Facial Massage?

Facial massage has gained popularity in the United States and Europe in recent years thanks to endorsements from gorgeous celebrities like Meghan Markle and Cate Blanchett. However, it’s been a staple of Asian beauty routines for hundreds of years.

Facial massage is the practice of gently rubbing and kneading the face using specific motions to improve the overall health and appearance of the skin. It’s similar to a traditional body massage, but it’s done with light pressure due to the sensitive nature of the face.

It’s a deeply relaxing procedure with benefits ranging from glowing skin and more defined contours to lymphatic drainage and headache management. You can perform a facial massage on yourself or have a professional do it for a more thorough and relaxing treatment.

When Should You Do Facial Massage?

You’ll see the best results from facial massages if you do them at least twice a week, though you can do them daily if you prefer. The best time to do a facial massage is when you’re applying a product to your face, such as your a.m. moisturizer or a night serum. Using a product first ensures your fingers or massage tool will glide over your skin smoothly.

Whether you choose to do your facial massage in the morning or evening, each option has its own benefits.

  • A morning facial massage can reduce any puffiness you may develop overnight. It will stimulate your circulation so you start your day with luminous skin. A morning facial massage is also a great way to set a calm, positive tone for the day.
  • An evening facial massage is excellent for relieving any tension you may be holding in your facial muscles, which will help prevent future fine lines and wrinkles. Introduce facial massage as part of your bedtime routine, and you may even find that you fall asleep more easily.

Facial Massage Benefits

There are many reasons your skin will thank you for introducing facial massage into your skincare routine. Some benefits you will see right away, such as a youthful, glowing complexion and decreased puffiness. Others, such as scar management and tighter skin, will be revealed over time with a consistent facial massage routine.

Benefits of a facial massage include:

  • Glowing, rejuvenated skin thanks to improved circulation
  • Lymphatic drainage that can reduce puffiness
  • Reduced appearance of raised scars as the tissues loosen up
  • Tighter skin and facial muscles
  • A more sculpted appearance around the jawline and cheekbones
  • Reduced sinus symptoms such as congestion and headache
  • More relaxed facial muscles that can prevent future wrinkles

Disadvantages of Facial Massage

While most people experience few side effects when properly performing facial massages, there are a couple of potential downsides that it’s important to note. People with very sensitive skin may experience some redness and irritation with certain facial massage tools, and active breakouts may be too tender for many facial massage methods.

Geneo facials are a great option for sensitive skin, as our hands-free massage method is gentle enough even for active breakouts.

How to Do a Facial Massage Step-by-Step

Now that you know the many benefits of facial massage, it’s time to learn how to do it! This section will provide step-by-step directions on how to perform an effective facial massage to improve your skin’s health and appearance.

Before we dive into the facial massage steps, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Always wash your face and hands before beginning.
  • Start your facial massage by applying a product such as a moisturizer, facial oil, or serum. Your fingers must be able to glide over your skin without any pulling.
  • You can perform these steps using your hands or a facial massage tool such as a gua sha stone, jade roller, or vibrating massager.
  • Repeat each step about five times before moving to the next.

Follow the facial massage steps below to revitalize your skin and ease facial tension.

  • Forehead: Place the knuckles of your index fingers on your forehead between your eyebrows. Stroke up toward your hairline and then out toward your temples.
  • Eyes: Place your knuckles on either side of the bridge of your nose level with your eyes. In an upward, arcing motion, stroke your fingers under your brow bone. When you reach the outer corners of your eyes, continue the movement under your eyes. (Imagine you’re drawing an oval shape around your eyes).
  • Cheeks: With your knuckles on your cheekbones near your nose, stoke up and out. Move your hands down a little and repeat the motion on the underside of your cheekbones.
  • Mouth: Make peace signs with both hands. Place them on either side of your mouth, with your index fingers above your upper lip and your middle fingers below your bottom lip. Slide your fingers outward toward your ears.
  • Chin: Place your knuckles on the center of your chin at the jawline. Stroke them upward toward your ears.
  • Neck: With your knuckles on either side of your jaw, perform a sweeping motion that starts under your ears and goes down along your neck. Reverse the move and repeat.

The Secret to Aging Gracefully

A Unique, Customizable Treatment

Smartface Brows & Skin, located in Solana Beach, is the go-to spot to make sure that you never have to stress about your skin again. Their talented team of estheticians and permanent makeup artists know that it’s all in the details. They are true believers in customization and delivering trustworthy results that you are sure to obsess over, making Geneo the perfect fit for their practice!

Kim Bertrand, Practice Owner & Esthetician, loves Geneo because it is unlike any other facial device at her practice. She said, “Geneo is a unique modality and technology. Our clients love the results and that they feel the active ingredients on their skin. They can feel the treatment working.”

Revive. Rejuvenate. Repeat.

With an average clientele of 40-49 years old, Smartface finds themselves using the Revive treatment the most. Geneo Revive Facial is the secret to aging gracefully! Its key ingredients include red algae, caffeic acid, retinol and ferulic acid, which improves the skin’s elasticity, reduces fine lines and diminished signs of aging. In addition to these outstanding results, Kim loves the Geneo Revive Facial because “it smells amazing and adds a ton of hydration to the skin and deep below the surface.”

Geneo’s patented oxygenation technology allows for deep infusion of hydrating ingredients by triggering the body’s natural, physiological process of increased oxygen levels internally. Oxygen is carried to the surface of the skin where the increased levels of oxygen prep the skin for maximum absorption throughout the rest of the facial treatment.

Put Your Best (and most radiant) Face Forward.

Kim has been a licensed esthetician for over 15 years with the goal of giving her clients the gift of not only an enchanting glow, but an education on your skin health. Her clients describe her facial treatments as nothing less than phenomenal. One client said, “This is my go-to place for facials! I can honestly say that each time was amazing, and I came out feeling invigorated and beautiful at the end. These women are awesome and can answer any of your skin-care questions and set you up on an at-home routine to keep yourself looking and feeling your best.”

As an expert in her field, Kim knows the importance of customizable, all-in-one skincare treatments. Smartface implemented Geneo because “it is simultaneously exfoliating and oxygenating the skin,” which is the trick to maximizing absorption of ingredients and improving skin naturally. To further enhance each client’s experience and target their specific needs, Kim sometimes adds a sheet mask with microcurrent to Geneo facials to improve facial contour and boost blood circulation of the newly oxygenated blood below the skin’s surface thanks to Geneo.

An Individualized Approach To Skincare

R3 Health, located in Palm Beach, FL, are the aesthetics experts when it comes to beauty and medical services. Geneo is used for over 50% of their monthly facial treatments due to its immediate and long-term results seen after just one treatment. Aesthetician Jenifer Rose tells us, “we always want to incorporate the latest technology into our practices, making Geneo the perfect fit. It offers an individualized approach to treating the skin. Clients love the instant gratification and are addicted to the way their skin feels after a Geneo treatment.”

Within a 3-in-1 skincare platform, Geneo’s patented OxyGeneo technology is the key differentiator versus other facial treatments, which simultaneously oxygenates and exfoliates the skin during the treatment’s first step. “I love that Geneo does so much in just one facial! However, my favorite part is definitely the exfoliation,” says Jenifer. “It exfoliates the epidermis while triggering the Bohr Effect from within.” The Bohr Effect is the body’s natural response of releasing oxygen from blood cells and sending it to the skin’s surface, oxygenating the skin from within for long-lasting results. “Geneo creates CO2 on the skin’s surface, which is starving the skin of oxygen and then re-oxygenates the skin from within. This really helps with cell turnover and improvements in tone and texture,” says Jenifer.

Expert Care Individualized for You.

With over 25 services offered at R3 Health, they are truly the go-to Med Spa if you are looking for a complete, individualized skincare and wellness routine. Although Geneo offers five customizable treatments for every age, skin type and season, Jenifer and her team take skincare personalization to the next level by layering additional treatments to better achieve each client’s skincare needs. “During the same appointment, we can layer on dermaplaning, extractions, jelly mask, high frequency and radiofrequency skin tightening on the face, neck and jawline,” says Jenifer. “We also will do a Geneo treatment a week or two before microneedling, skin resurfacing and IPL treatments for optimal results.”

For consistent results all year long, Jenifer recommends monthly Geneo facials for maintenance. Because there is no downtime needed, you can even stop by R3 Health during your lunch break for a Geneo face or body treatment.

Preventive Skincare Maintenance

Focus on Relaxing, Non-Invasive Skincare Treatments

Spa Bar Miami operates as a unique “spa bar” concept in Coral Gables, FL.  Their tagline is “Let your body escape during your lunch break or after work for a great time at our bar.” Clients receive a 1-on-1, complimentary hands-on analysis of their skin by a qualified skincare specialist. Owner/practitioner Natalia Moreno, noted, “We do everything that is non-invasive—facials, microdermabrasion, micro-needling. And now we offer the Geneo. People like when I use technology. The Geneo, in particular, it really relaxes. On the ultrasound part, people say “I can stay here the whole day.” “I try to educate my clients about prevention, taking care of their skin when they’re young and, of course, at any age. I tell them you can treat your skin with non-invasive…take care of your skin every day and do non-invasive treatments.”

Fit Customized Skincare Into Your Busy Schedule

Natalia says, “What I like about the Geneo is that it’s 3 in 1. It concentrates everything and you can really see the results on the same day.” In fact, Geneo facials fit perfectly into her spa concept of a relaxing, fun experience for skincare. With the Geneo, her clients can stop by, get a great skincare treatment and go on to their next activity with amazing looking skin. Natalia noted, “The length of the treatment depends upon the client’s skin.  I had a client the other day that only had 30 minutes so we did a 30 minute treatment with the Geneo. It’s that customizable.”

Mixing It Up With Geneo Technology

Natalia selected the Geneo for her practice because she can use it on all of her clients and it aligns with her skincare philosophy. “Everything is together and it’s for every type of skin, every age.  If I have a client that has rosacea, I will only do a light exfoliation, not too long. I will only do it for 5 minutes and stay away from where their rosacea is. When someone comes in with acne and acne scars, I can do a little bit more exfoliation for like 8 minutes.” I can do dermaplaning before the Geneo and I always do a mask after the Geneo. It all depends on how I see their skin. I will often put a calming mask on to enhance the relaxing experience.”

Geneo: A Non-Invasive Alternative To Micro-Needling

I have clients that come and have a wedding in two day. They want micro-needling but I tell them not to worry, I have a better solution. I have a perfect fit for you. Let’s do Geneo, you’re going to be glowing, the ingredients are going to penetrate better, your make-up is going to look better.”

Spa Bar Miami
